My perspective on the therapy room:
These days, what encourages many clients to seek therapy is exhaustion within the ordinary circumstances of daily life: loneliness and staying in relationships, grief and life's losses, crises, changes that come with aging or the arrival of a child, understanding mixed feelings, tolerating uncertainty, shame and guilt, resilience, and other experiences that often arise from life in the modern world.
Alongside being equipped to diagnose, we need to offer clients a new experience of relating to their inner and outer worlds and kindle a desire to think about themselves. We also need to renew our own thinking and perspective and develop effective, fresh tools for working with them. I believe reaching this point requires not only ongoing study but also serious engagement in our own therapy as therapists.
