Fear of Change: Why Is It So Hard to Change, Even When We Are Suffering?
Final thoughts Fear of change is not always a sign of weakness. Our mind tries to protect what is familiar, even when those circumstances are no longer right for us. For this reason, we may sometimes stay in situations that cause us pain simply because change feels unknown and frightening. But staying is also a choice, and it has its own costs. Sometimes the important question is not “Am I afraid of change?” but “Do I want fear to make my decisions for me?” Change does not have to be large or sudden. Sometimes a small step, an honest conversation, or seeking professional help can begin a journey we have been considering for a long time. If you feel that fear of change has kept you for a long time in circumstances that are no longer right for you, talking with a psychologist can offer an opportunity to understand that fear and find an appropriate path toward change.
