My perspective on the therapy room:
In psychoanalysis, particularly in the perspectives of Winnicott and Phillips, the therapist is an active participant in exploring the patient's unconscious. Winnicott emphasizes care and patience, maintaining that the therapist must be able to hold the patient's conflicts and wait for them to resolve naturally within the patient. This process does not seek immediate recovery alone; it also allows patients to discover themselves and develop the capacity to surprise themselves.
The transference relationship between patient and therapist plays a central role. Through this relationship, what has been wandering in the patient's unconscious can enter awareness. In interaction with the therapist, patients can experience their feelings and conflicts and gain a better understanding of themselves through the therapist's reflections.
Phillips also highlights the importance of risk in psychoanalysis. In particular, he suggests that psychoanalysis can only expose patients to the risk of discovering their wishes and feelings. This risk is a way into the unknown and toward encountering the true self. From this perspective, therapy is a journey toward discovering and experiencing authenticity, with the therapeutic relationship providing a safe space for growth and self-understanding.
In these perspectives, psychoanalysis is a dynamic, interaction-centered process. The therapist does not simply seek an immediate cure, but guides patients in discovering themselves and developing deeper relationships with objects and their inner world.
